The Cake Guide
Everything you need to know before you order, and after your cake arrives.
Choosing Your Flavour
With such a delicious array of options, selecting the perfect flavour can feel like a beautifully difficult task. To help you find the ideal match for your event, here are a few of my favourite elements to consider:
The Occasion: A light, delicate Victoria Sponge or Zesty Lemon Cake is a beautiful pairing for sunlit afternoon celebrations, while a deeply rich Chocolate Mud Cake or Sticky Toffee feels wonderfully indulgent for cosy evening gatherings.
Your Guests: If you are looking for an absolute crowd-pleaser, timeless classics like my Red Velvet or traditional Vanilla rarely disappoint. Feeling a little more adventurous? Striking pairings like Coconut & Lime or Mocha & Espresso are always a memorable talking point.
The Season: Let the weather inspire you. Apple & Cinnamon and Sticky Ginger bring a wonderfully warming comfort to autumn and winter events, whilst Zesty Lemon or Coconut & Lime offer a fresh, vibrant burst of sunshine for spring and summer.
Still undecided?
Please never hesitate to get in touch. I am always delighted to chat through your event, share my recommendations, and help you design your perfect flavour profile.
How to Order
Because every cake is individually handcrafted and made to order in small batches, my diary fills up quickly. To ensure I can dedicate the necessary time and care to your creation, please plan ahead where possible:
Standard Cakes (6\" and 8\"): Please get in touch at least 2 weeks prior to your collection date.
Large & Multi-Tiered Cakes (10\"): Due to the intricate design work and extended preparation time involved, these require a minimum of 1 month's notice.
Have a last-minute request? It is always worth getting in touch — if I have a rare opening in my diary, I will do my best to accommodate you!
Portion & Cutting Guide
Not sure which size to choose? The guide below is based on standard, generous dessert portions. If you cut your cake into smaller, party-style finger portions, it will go even further!
How to Get the Perfect Slice
The Cleanest Cut: Use a long, sharp, non-serrated chef's knife for smooth, neat slices.
The Baker's Secret: Dip your knife blade into a jug of warm water and wipe it clean with a damp cloth between every single cut. This prevents buttercream and ganache from clinging to the blade, keeping each slice looking pristine.
Cutting Tall Cakes: For taller layer cakes, avoid traditional triangular wedges. Instead, cut horizontal strips across the cake, lay each strip flat on a board, and slice vertically into rectangular portions. It is far easier to serve and gives everyone an equal taste of filling!
6\" Round, 10 to 12 dessert portions (or up to 18 party/coffee portions)
8\" Round, 20 to 24 dessert portions (or up to 32 party/coffee portions)
10\" Round, 30 to 38 dessert portions (or up to 50 party/coffee portions)
Storing Your Cake
Your cake is handcrafted and freshly baked to order. To ensure it stays as beautiful and delicious as the moment you collect it, please follow these simple storage guidelines:
Storage & Temperature Guide:
Keep It Cool: Store your cake in its box in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, radiators, and strong food odours.
Cooler Months: A cool room or pantry is perfect.
Warmer Summer Months: The fridge is best to keep the buttercream firm and stable.
Important Note for Fondant & Sugar Work: Avoid refrigerating cakes decorated with fondant icing, sugar flowers, or delicate toppers. Returning cold fondant to room temperature creates condensation, which can make the surface wet, sticky, and cause decorations to soften or droop.
Serving & Enjoying Your Cake:
Serve at Room Temperature: Cake is always best enjoyed at room temperature! If your cake has been in the fridge, take it out 1 to 2 hours before serving so the sponge softens and the buttercream melts beautifully.
Airtight is Key: Once cut, store remaining slices in an airtight container, or wrap the exposed sponge with clingfilm to lock in moisture.
Best Enjoyed Within: Your cake will be at its absolute best within 3 to 4 days of collection.
Transporting Your Cake
Transporting a celebration cake can feel a little nerve-wracking, but following these essential driving and setup tips will ensure your cake arrives at your venue perfectly intact!
Where to Put Your Cake:
The Passenger Footwell is Best: The safest place for your cake is flat on the floor of the front passenger footwell. It is the most level and stable area in the car.
The Boot is Your Second Best Option: If your footwell is unavailable, place the cake flat on a non-slip mat in the boot.
Never Place a Cake on a Car Seat: Car seats tilt backwards and are cushioned, which causes the cake to slide, tilt, or collapse on corners.
Never Hold the Box on a Passenger's Lap: Body heat and natural movement make lap-holding unstable and risky for tiered cakes.
Climate Control & Driving Tips:
Blast the Air Conditioning: Buttercream and chocolate ganache soften very quickly in a warm car. Turn your air conditioning on high, cold, and directed toward the floor 5 minutes before putting the cake in the car.
Drive Smoothly: Take corners gently, avoid sudden braking, and take speed bumps at a snail's pace.
Avoid Direct Sun: Even on cool days, direct sunlight streaming through car windows can melt buttercream fast. Use window blinds or place the box away from direct light.
Handling the Box:
Carry from the Bottom: Always support the cake box with both hands flat underneath the base. Never pick up a box by its sides, top, or handles, as squeezing the cardboard will smudge the delicate frosting.
Keep It Flat: Keep the box completely level while walking to and from your car.
